When Queenie is fired from yet another chef position (this time for refusing a diner ketchup to eat on his eggs), she has nowhere to go — Nowhere but Home. Home is small-town North Star, Texas. She left for good after college, running from her past and the lack of a future with the love of her life. But job after job leaves her feeling unfulfilled, and picking up and moving so often has left her with no roots.
When she returns home for a short-term stay to regroup while she’s looking for a job, she feels all she’s been missing. Though she hasn’t been physically around, the connection with her sister and her nephew compels her to stick around. Connecting with old friends (and trying to avoid old enemies) feels comfortable too.
Queenie is offered an unlikely job cooking “last meals” for death-row inmates at the state prison. Could this be where she finally taps into her passion for cooking?
I always look for “something more” in my women’s fiction. Sometimes that comes in the form of deep characters, sometimes an interesting setting, and other times it’s humor. This was my first time to read a novel by Liza Palmer, and I definitely enjoyed the “something more” in the way of the quirky characters, the sense of humor with which Palmer infused the story, and the accurate small-town Texas setting, with the added interest of a prison work setting.
