Gift Ideas

one thousand giftsYou can’t be a Christian mom blogger or anyone who is familiar with any Christian mom bloggers online, and not know of Ann Voskamp. Or maybe you aren’t familiar with her online, but you’ve certainly heard someone sing praises — or maybe express reservations — about her book One Thousand Gifts: A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are.

I was sent an email last week asking if I wanted to do a last minute Mother’s Day review and/or giveaway of the book, and I knew I wanted to. I bought the book on my Kindle a while ago, but had never gotten around to reading it, so I decided that I’d try to get through some of it, so I could do some sort of review as well.

Well.

I’m glad I finally got around to reading it.  I am halfway through it and loving it.  I love her poetic style of writing most of all and a close second to that is her total honesty with herself and her God.  She’s had reasons to doubt His goodness, she knows people who have reasons to doubt His goodness, and yet she clings to Him and even seeks to know and understand Him more fully.  For her, that fullness means digging deep and exploring any areas where she might not be fully committed or fully trusting of God and His plan.

This brings mixed feelings to someone like me, someone who does not doubt and just accepts things at face value. I understand that I have the gift of faith. I easily can look to God’s sovereignty and trust that He will use my circumstances for my ultimate good, even if — and honestly, especially when — there is pain and/or suffering involved. But that seems so pat and easy. Does that mean I’m not as deep as others who want to really understand, to really prove, and really be sure that they are embracing everything at their core? I sometimes wish I had the faith to doubt or question or explore, and so reading the honest sojourn of another believer helps me see that or experience it in a second-hand way.

As soon as I started reading it, I wanted to buy a copy for a friend of mine. She’s a big reader, so I didn’t buy the book, but printed out a pretty picture of it and said, “I want to give this to you for your birthday if you don’t already have it.” She did have it, but like me, hadn’t read it yet, so I told her I had another book in mind and encouraged her to read her copy.

So, with Mother’s Day around the corner, you may think of those who have helped you to be the kind of mother you are. Perhaps it’s a good friend or your own mother or other relative. Giving someone a book like this — a book by a mother and with the joys and pains of motherhood at the very root of the story — will be a way to help her go deeper in her own mothering experience, or to thank her for what she’s meant to you.  Or during this special month, you can choose to give it to yourself.

This giveaway of One Thousand Gifts is open to U.S. and Canadian residents. Please leave a comment telling me what you liked about the book if you have read it, and who you would want to gift a copy to. If you haven’t read it, tell me you’d like to! The winner will be announced on May 22. The giveaway is closed.

The Unofficial Narnia Cookbook

Why yes, yes I did squeal when I heard about The Unofficial Narnia Cookbook. Then I squealed louder when it arrived on my doorstep.

See, I have a thing for Narnia. (Both of my boys are named after C.S. Lewis in some form or fashion.) Every year (in July) I host the Chronicles of Narnia Reading Challenge over at Reading to Know. I look forward to returning to Narnia every year. More recently I have had the pleasure of bringing my children along for the adventurous ride. What better way to indulge my reading passions than by cooking up dishes inspired by or taken from the Narnia books themselves?!

Windows on the World: Complete Wine Course

I like my wine.  I can’t quite say that I’m an oenophile because I don’t know nearly enough about it, but I’m working my way there. What I picked up in a wine shop when I was in Italy a year and a half ago spurred me to learn more about the grapes and how they’re grown and the processing of wine so that I can make more informed choices about what I want to drink.

Kevin Zraly’s Kevin Zraly’s Windows on the World Complete Wine Course is a great addition to my collection of wine knowledge.  The 323 page book covers all sorts of information from how to match wine with food (an area I tend to ignore) to grape varieties and way more.

Books on Wine for Christmas

I woke up in a panic shortly after dropping off last night, worried because I still haven’t started my Christmas shopping. Well, I’ve sort of started, but I’m nowhere near finished. For those of you in a similar situation, or for you freaks organized people who are mostly finished but just need a couple more items, I suggest giving books.  Here are 3 suggestions for the wine lover on your list.

The Wine Region of Rioja:

This is a gorgeous, coffee-table book that nonetheless packs a lot of information between its covers. It focuses on the Rioja region of Spain.

Bitter Brew

My husband is a Bud man. We now live in the state with the highest number of microbreweries in the country, and he has branched out to some of our local brews, but when it comes down to it, his beer of choice is still Budweiser. Which is why I had to read Bitter Brew: The Rise and Fall of Anheuser-Busch and the King of Beers. Now when I’ve mentioned this book title to friends, their comment is always, “what fall?” To which I tell them to read the book and find out.

Bitter Brew tells the story of Anheuser-Busch, starting with Adolphus Busch’s emigration to the US from Germany, where he and Eberhard Anheuser, father of Adolphus’s wife Lilly, came together to form the company.

Julie Andrews’ Treasury for All Seasons

Most people remember Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins or the free-spirited Maria or the Queen of Muldovia. For me, she’s always been the author of one of my favorite childhood books and as of late, when you hear about her, it’s more likely in regards to literacy than acting.

Julie Andrews’ Treasury for All Seasons: Poems and Songs to Celebrate the Year is a collection of children’s poetry, organized by season, selected by Julie Andrews and her daughter Emma Walton Hamilton. There are poems (and even songs) from such authors as Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, Cole Porter, Dr. Seuss, and E.B.

The Lego Adventure Book

My son is used to books arriving on our doorstep for us to review. When a package is delivered there is only mild interest at this point. I knew The LEGO Adventure Book was on its way to our home and thought this book might spark a little bit more excitement. Upon this book’s arrival, I hid it behind my back and told him I had a surprise. “Books?” he asked, unimpressed. His expression changed considerably when I whipped this particular title out. His eyes went buggy and his mouth fell open. Silently, reverently, he took the book from me. I have permission to “borrow” it for the sole purpose of writing this review and then I am required through a solemn vow to return it to him promptly.
