Book Apps

5M4B disclosure

WallaceIconThe times, they are a changin’.  Growing up, my mom used to put me in front of the television to watch Sesame Street or Electric Company and tell herself that it was educational as the hours ticked by.  Nowadays, parents are just as likely to hand over an iPad or an iPhone to Junior, often with little educational content included.  Play and Learn from Priddy Books is aiming to change that.

Priddy Books is a well-known publisher of educational children’s books from baby through preschool.  Their books are designed to spark senses and develop awareness of various age-appropriate skills.  The preschool books are created to be wipe clean books so that children can use them repeatedly.  Priddy Books recognizes that physical books are not always the way that children learn and interact and has created a Play and Learn app to create a fun and educational app that will appeal to preschoolers through first graders.

As a parent with a vested interest in children who love to read, I appreciate how the app is set up to build upon skills and increase in complexity as children have achieved mastery in skills.  The My First Spelling game (a $3.99 in app purchase that is currently on sale for $1.99) has a variety of games within it to entertain the beginning reader.

There is a matching game where you have to play a version of memory with six cards to match letters, something that even non-readers can accomplish.  It also includes more challenging activities that ask you to spell simple words like “pot” or “nut” or “cup” by dragging them into a word box.  Touching the letter tile provides the sound it makes, so it’s reinforcing the potential for language and reading even in a child who isn’t quite there yet.  There is no “wrong” consequence with the letters simply returning to their spot if they are incorrect.  There is a simpler version of that, as well, where you simply need to drag the first letter of a word into the box, which is easier for early readers, as are the games where you simply need to identify the first letter of various words like “car” or vice versa, identifying words that start or don’t start with a particular letter.

There are other games, as well, that introduce counting, colors, math, and more.  I would like to see each game in the app be customizable to a level of proficiency.  If my child can identify that “sun” starts with “s” but isn’t quite ready to spell it yet, I’d like to not have that question be part of the game, but currently they all simply rotate with no customization.

On the plus side, there is a great parental review section of the app.  Not only can you assign multiple users so that you can allow each child their own avatar, but you can track the progress.  You can see which activities they did and how recently.  It also includes how well they scored, which really gives you a sense of whether they understand it or whether they were simply guessing and might need a little assistance from you the next time they work on it.

In my world, games and apps will never replace books.  There is definitely a place for them, and Priddy Books has done a wonderful job in translating their captivating and interactive physical books into the iPad and iPhone realm.

Dr. Seuss Apps

With Dr. Seuss’ birthday (March 2nd) around the corner it was a great time for my son and I to review some fun apps from Oceanhouse Media.  We were lucky to receive a few great ones to try out and a couple of codes to pass on also!

Dr. Seuss Camera – The Cat in the Hat Edition

We have had so much fun taking picture of each other and making them into ‘cards’ based on Dr. Seuss artwork.  You can create cards with fun borders or even put your child’s face right into the picture to become the Cat in the Hat or Thing One.

Chat LIVE with Barbara Kingsolver about Flight Behavior {with Giveaway}

Barbara Kingsolver will chat live on Facebook and Twitter with the Sony Readers Book Club about her newest novel Flight Behavior (linked to Elizabeth’s review). I have enjoyed Kingsolver’s fiction, and was glad to hear that Elizabeth gave it 5-Stars. I can’t wait to read it and join in the live discussion with the author. Sign up now on the Facebook page if you want to join us on January 16 from 12:30 – 1:30 PST. I’ll be there!

And what’s more, I am pleased to be hosting a giveaway, thanks to the Sony Reader Store, for an ebook copy of Flight Behavior.  I plan to write up a separate post about how much I love my new Sony ereader that I was given as a part of being one of the VIP Readers in the Sony Readers Bookclub (short answers — VERY light, it just disappears into my hand, and the absolute ease of borrowing books free from my library system),  but if you don’t have one, or perhaps you’re not yet convinced that you would like an ereader (and let me just say — you’re wrong about that — but that’s an argument for another day) — you can read this ebook on your apple or android device on the Sony Reader Apps.

Wondertown

Wondertown by Mac Fallows is different from most other YA fiction.  Not only is it only available on the iPad – which isn’t so unusual these days – but it is a musical book with twelve songs interspersed throughout the book.  It’s almost like a musical play in a book, as the songs tell the story of the action happening and are sung by the characters of the book, with you choosing whether to play them or not.

The book itself centers on eleven year old Neil Abbott who doesn’t fit in with his world, much to his mother’s chagrin and his father’s shame.

Saint Nick and the Space Nicks: An iApp

Saint Nicholas and the Space NicksI treasure Christmas books.  Every year, my parents bought me a new book for Christmas, and this is a tradition I’ve maintained with the wee ones.  Except now the concept of books has expanded to include apps, such as Saint Nick and the Space Nicks by Richard Chase Mears – available both on the iPad and  for iPhone ($1.99).

Saint Nick was originally a “standard” book – and is of course still available in that format – but now comes in an interactive app that children can read alone or have read to them.  The app also includes coloring pages that kept Little Miss occupied and entertained, as well as the now traditional interactive aspects to the app as you read the book.

Chug the Bug-Chug Makes Makes New Friends 3D App

When I got the email about this app I was very curious to see how Mobad Media created a 3D world.  I was surprised how the images did really appear to have depth.  I found they seemed to recede right into my iPod and with movement really came to life.  They got me just on the cool factor and I played with it for a good while…then I ‘read’ the story with my son.

Chug the Bug
is unsure what type of bug he is and starts an adventure of self-discovery.  He heads off to school for the first time and meets all sorts of new bugs.  They need to learn to use their own unique abilities and skills to meet everyday childhood challenges.

The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin, an omBooks book app

Just in time for Hallowe’en a whole slew of apps are showing up.  omBooks has several great options aimed at different age groups.  I decided to check out The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin by Joe Troiano.  Spookley is different than all the other pumpkins in the patch, he is square!  He is teased and feels sad that he can’t roll around the patch like all the round pumpkins.  During a big storm it is up to level-headed (so bad I know) Spookley to save all the other pumpkins from rolling down the hill and crashing into the ocean below.

Download the Weird

Ok, I realize this is a little strange. For me. Perhaps slightly out of character. Maybe just a little. (Then again, maybe not.) But I really am morbidly fascinated by Ripley’s Believe it or Not. Apparently they now know this of me because they send me their books unsolicited. I received Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! Download the Weird, the newest edition, a few weeks ago and settled in to read/flip through it after the kids were down for a nap. (Fact: Ripley’s can be intense. I usually have to hide their books from my children’s eyes as I have one son who is extremely affected by visually odd things.

Where is Boots? Dora Hide and Seek Adventure App {review and giveaway}

The newest installment in Budge studios Dora app family, Where is Boots?, has a few extra tricks up its sleeve.  It is nice to see that it has a story, a game, and a sticker page.  I really appreciate when an app has more than one feature as I feel I can get more out of it.

The story has Dora looking for Boots in the jungle and encountering adventures along the way.  My son showed me a banana tossing game between Boots and Dora but by far his favourite feature is the sticker page.  We had fun monkeying (yup pun intended) around with Boots and Dora and all the other characters.  He figured out how to place stickers and expand them.  Then he was able to tap on them to animate them.  He had the option to delete his masterpiece or save it to his album.

Dora & Diego’s Vacation Adventure, a Storybook app {Review and Giveaway}

The Dora & Diego Vacation Adventure app has 40 interactive animations and stickers for little ones to explore. Dora, Diego and various friends explore and have fun while on a camping adventure.

My son is currently going through a ‘that’s for girls’ phase so I thought this might be a good choice as it has Diego (who for some reason my son calls Iago). He very easily navigated throughout the story and was able to figure out the different challenges with very little instruction. Having never watched Dora didn’t seem to matter as the story captured him and the ‘game’ elements of placing stickers in their magic spots and tapping characters was entertaining.
