Ereaders and Ebooks

Editor’s Note: On this Mother’s Day, I’m happy to feature one of our own — a writer and mother who has written a parenting book.  Meet Genny:

When I started my parenting blog several years ago, I was struck by the sense of community I found online. There seemed to be such an openness, and it taught me to be more open as well.

It also helped me to find my writing voice.

I was encouraged and inspired by the stories and comments from women on my blog, and I wanted to find a way to bring more moms together and encourage them back.

So I began writing a book.

Many months later, I finished the first draft of Finding Mommy Bliss and, just recently, my book was released via a new reading app called Snippet.

Snippet is free in the app store and provides a new, multimedia reading experience on  iPads and iPhones – sort of a cross between a book and a blog.

Each title in the Snippet library has 1,000 words or less per chapter, along with “discoverables” which are icons that readers can click on to view things like videos (here’s an image of the video icon and video that goes with it):

There are also discoverables for things like photographs, audio clips from the author, graphics, and other interactive features.

In addition, Snippet has a unique social feature that pulls conversations from twitter based on hashtag. So, for example, when someone tweets using the hashtag #mommybliss, their tweet can be seen within Finding Mommy Bliss by readers.

To get a better idea of the new kind of reading experience Snippet provides, check out this quick video:

Snippet from Snippet App on Vimeo.

While the new app is still in the beginning stages of launch, there’s been a great amount of enthusiasm around it (it reached #7 in the app store a couple weeks ago).

As an author, it’s been really exciting to be involved with Snippet, and I love how the new format works so well with my vision for Finding Mommy Bliss (to bring women together and encourage them). The way Snippet allows readers to connect with the author and other readers all in one place is really unique.

And I have to say, as a busy mom who likes to be able to read on my phone and iPad, I’m not only a Snippet author, I’ve become a Snippet reader too.

If you want to learn more about this new reading platform, or check out the books in Snippet’s library, you can download it for free in the app store, or follow the direct link here: http://appstore.com/snippetapp

Guest contributor Genny lives in Northern California with her husband and two kids, where she balances writing with motherhood and loves both. She’s an author, speaker, blogger and coffee lover. Stop by her blog and share a cup!

On Reading: An Author’s Thoughts on Self-Publishing

jennienashA cool thing about being a book reviewer is sometimes being able to chat offline with authors whose books I enjoy. If I read and review one of his or her books, especially when I really like it, then he or she will often offer me the next book that comes out, and sometimes we get friendly via email. At the very least, I go on a list where I know I’ll hear about the next project. I love that.  Jennie Nash is one of those authors for me.  I wrote about that, as well as linking to my reviews of her other novels, when I reviewed her latest novel Perfect Red.

mzl.ujpluefq.480x480-75

Did you know the National Wildlife Federation has a great learning app for iPad?  Neither did I! The first in the series is Ranger Rick Jr. Appventures Lions. Produced by the same people who put out Ranger Rick magazines this app lets adventurous kids follow Ricky Racoon and his friends as they learn all about lions.

The app is divided into three categories Explore, Play and Create.  This educational and fun app guides young adventures (age 4-7) through a series of animal games, videos, stories, puzzles, jokes and more including

·         Photo Safari - a game that asks children to take photos of all the lions in Lars’ pride.

When It Happens to You by Molly Ringwald #SonyReader

I’ve really come to appreciate short stories, but by far my favorite way to read them is as a collection that is somehow related, with overlapping themes or characters or place. When it Happens to You by Molly Ringwald is a collection of short stories billed as a “novel in stories” in the subtitle. I totally agree with that assessment.

Each story focuses on a particular character or event and yet they all work together, mostly to tell the story of Greta and Phillip. The first story describes the stress in their lives due to infertility issues as they’ve been trying to have a sibling for their daughter Charlotte.

Dr. Seuss Apps

With Dr. Seuss’ birthday (March 2nd) around the corner it was a great time for my son and I to review some fun apps from Oceanhouse Media.  We were lucky to receive a few great ones to try out and a couple of codes to pass on also!

Dr. Seuss Camera – The Cat in the Hat Edition

We have had so much fun taking picture of each other and making them into ‘cards’ based on Dr. Seuss artwork.  You can create cards with fun borders or even put your child’s face right into the picture to become the Cat in the Hat or Thing One.

Chat LIVE with Barbara Kingsolver about Flight Behavior {with Giveaway}

Barbara Kingsolver will chat live on Facebook and Twitter with the Sony Readers Book Club about her newest novel Flight Behavior (linked to Elizabeth’s review). I have enjoyed Kingsolver’s fiction, and was glad to hear that Elizabeth gave it 5-Stars. I can’t wait to read it and join in the live discussion with the author. Sign up now on the Facebook page if you want to join us on January 16 from 12:30 – 1:30 PST. I’ll be there!

And what’s more, I am pleased to be hosting a giveaway, thanks to the Sony Reader Store, for an ebook copy of Flight Behavior.  I plan to write up a separate post about how much I love my new Sony ereader that I was given as a part of being one of the VIP Readers in the Sony Readers Bookclub (short answers — VERY light, it just disappears into my hand, and the absolute ease of borrowing books free from my library system),  but if you don’t have one, or perhaps you’re not yet convinced that you would like an ereader (and let me just say — you’re wrong about that — but that’s an argument for another day) — you can read this ebook on your apple or android device on the Sony Reader Apps.

Wondertown

Wondertown by Mac Fallows is different from most other YA fiction.  Not only is it only available on the iPad – which isn’t so unusual these days – but it is a musical book with twelve songs interspersed throughout the book.  It’s almost like a musical play in a book, as the songs tell the story of the action happening and are sung by the characters of the book, with you choosing whether to play them or not.

The book itself centers on eleven year old Neil Abbott who doesn’t fit in with his world, much to his mother’s chagrin and his father’s shame.

Saint Nick and the Space Nicks: An iApp

Saint Nicholas and the Space NicksI treasure Christmas books.  Every year, my parents bought me a new book for Christmas, and this is a tradition I’ve maintained with the wee ones.  Except now the concept of books has expanded to include apps, such as Saint Nick and the Space Nicks by Richard Chase Mears – available both on the iPad and  for iPhone ($1.99).

Saint Nick was originally a “standard” book – and is of course still available in that format – but now comes in an interactive app that children can read alone or have read to them.  The app also includes coloring pages that kept Little Miss occupied and entertained, as well as the now traditional interactive aspects to the app as you read the book.

The first one is coming up, and it’s a book I’ve heard a lot about. I look forward to reading it.

Author Laini Taylor will join in a Facebook chat on November 28 2:30 – 3:30 (Central time) on her book Daughter of Smoke and Bone.

Chug the Bug-Chug Makes Makes New Friends 3D App

When I got the email about this app I was very curious to see how Mobad Media created a 3D world.  I was surprised how the images did really appear to have depth.  I found they seemed to recede right into my iPod and with movement really came to life.  They got me just on the cool factor and I played with it for a good while…then I ‘read’ the story with my son.

Chug the Bug
is unsure what type of bug he is and starts an adventure of self-discovery.  He heads off to school for the first time and meets all sorts of new bugs.  They need to learn to use their own unique abilities and skills to meet everyday childhood challenges.

The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin, an omBooks book app

Just in time for Hallowe’en a whole slew of apps are showing up.  omBooks has several great options aimed at different age groups.  I decided to check out The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin by Joe Troiano.  Spookley is different than all the other pumpkins in the patch, he is square!  He is teased and feels sad that he can’t roll around the patch like all the round pumpkins.  During a big storm it is up to level-headed (so bad I know) Spookley to save all the other pumpkins from rolling down the hill and crashing into the ocean below.

Download the Weird

Ok, I realize this is a little strange. For me. Perhaps slightly out of character. Maybe just a little. (Then again, maybe not.) But I really am morbidly fascinated by Ripley’s Believe it or Not. Apparently they now know this of me because they send me their books unsolicited. I received Ripley’s Believe It Or Not! Download the Weird, the newest edition, a few weeks ago and settled in to read/flip through it after the kids were down for a nap. (Fact: Ripley’s can be intense. I usually have to hide their books from my children’s eyes as I have one son who is extremely affected by visually odd things.
