papercraftbooks

‘Tis almost the season when parents everywhere begin looking for special activities and fun things for their children to do while they are on summer vacation. We home school in Oregon year ’round. That means that while we aren’t necessarily focused on special activities for summer, we’re always on the lookout for something fun to do when it’s raining. Indoor activities are a big deal to us!

Recently I was sent a copy of Paper Craft Crazy Critters and Paper Craft Dinosaurs to try out with my kids.

Now, these books happened to arrive on our doorstep on a sunny day in the Spring (rare!) so I thought we’d build one of these  3D models while sitting outside and soaking up some Vitamin D. We gathered up our glue sticks, choose a crazy critter, easily popped out the model and began putting it together.

Here is where I should mention that my children are ages six and four. My six year old was quite excited and ready to conquer the models all by himself but they didn’t work as well for him as he might have liked. The card stock at the models are printed on is nice, thick and strong. Ihe pieces for each model are very easy to pop out and manipulate as needed. Our problem was primarily with the glue sticks. These models will not hold together with your common glue stick. You really ought to use regular glue which is what is recommended by the manufacturer and suggested in the book. Secondarily, we had issues with the tiny little tabs which need folding and holding down and that was impossible for my four-year-old and difficult for my six-year-old. (In fact, the book is flatly not recommended for kids under 4.) That said, the quality of the paper, the bright, bold colors and silly designs of the animals make these models hugely attractive to the kids.

I have nothing but positive things to say about these books. I think the 3D models are well designed and given age and proper gluing agents, would be easy for kids to put together. My six year old agreed that these were lots of fun but that we should likely put them away for another year or so. He enjoyed doing it with me but it’s just a bit outside of his personal reach at this moment. (That or I’m just not crafty at all and haven’t given him adequate opportunities to glue tiny things. Take your pick!)

I would recommend these 3D models to any kid age 7 & up who can glue and manipulate small items for themselves. Each model will take time to build, but the end result is a cute little critter, such as this one, to play with:

Many thanks to Peter Pauper Press for sending these models our direction. My kids truly did love the look and feel of them. We completed one model (which had larger tabs) as a team and it held together well and brought much enjoyment. I’ve no doubt that in another year or so these will be a huge hit as a personal project and so we’ll tuck it away for a bit for optimal enjoyment.

Carrie is not crafty at all and is therefore always on the lookout for books such as these to give her kids a chance to do something “artsy” every once in awhile. She blogs about her creative finds over at Reading to Know. And mostly she blogs about books which she and her children read with some regularity, there being plenty of time in Oregon available to read!

John Butler’s Picture Books

If you don’t know who John Butler is, you are missing out. Seriously missing out. I’ve mentioned him before and I’m here to remind you of him again with these two titles from Peachtree Publishers.

Butler’s illustrations of animals are perfectly amazing. They are realistic, yet cartoonish. Approachable. Cuddly. And we’ve spent a lot of time with his books! My kids were excited to check out two new-to-us titles recently.

We have been longtime fans of Butler’s Ten In The Den and are all quite familiar with it. Now we’re enjoying Ten in the Meadow which features the same set of 10 animals.

Claude in the City

claudeinthecityI was rather excited to check out Claude in the City, the first in a new series by Alex T. Smith. Claude is a dog (obviously) who is small, plump and who wears a beret and red sweater. He lives in a house with Mr. and Mrs. Shineyshoes and his best friend, Sir Bobblysock. Sir Bobblysock is “grubby and smells a bit like cheese.”

Every day Mr. and Mrs. Shineyshoes put on their shiny shoes and their warm coats and leave for work. Once they have departed the house, Claude and Sir Bobblysock decide on what adventures they will have that day.

Awesome Dawson

I haven’t ever picked up any graphic novels for our kids and I can’t say that I’m terribly inclined to engage them much in general. Awesome Dawson, by Chris Gall is like a beginners graphic novel. It’s a picture book that is laid out in a comic format. I find reading this type of layout very distracting. There isn’t a natural flow to the sentences and everything about it just feels choppy and disorganized to me.

That said, my boys absolutely love this book.

Awesome Dawson is awesome because he can build anything out of anything. He collects things that people have tossed aside and builds amazing new creations with them.

Cooking for Your Gluten-Free Teen

cookingforyourglutenfreeteenThe story behind Cooking for Your Gluten-Free Teen is almost as interesting as the book itself. Carlyn Berghoff is a chef by profession and a mother to a daughter who was diagnosed with Celiac disease. In the opening pages of this book she explains what her daughter’s symptoms were, how she came to be diagnosed with Celiac and how this diagnosis affected their household as she made the decision to put their entire family on a gluten-free diet for simplicity sake. Berghoff fully acknowledges that going gluten free can be a complicated and expensive thing and that it takes some getting used to.

Peek-a-Boo!

Time for some ridiculously cute new titles from Tiger Tales books.

peekabooMy children are completely enthralled with these new titles. I opened the box which they arrived in and my two year old snatched these titles right out. We all (ages 2, 4, 6 and I’m-not-telling) sat down and loved them instantly, beginning with Peek-a-Boo!. Both this title and the next are unique because they have a set of magnetic arms which wrap around the book either keeping it closed or allowing you to open the pages and read the short little story. In this particular title, you pull back the bunny’s hands in order to open the book.

Oh So Tiny Bunny

ohsotinybunnyFans of Miss Spider and her creator, David Kirk, will be excited to hear that he has released a new title – Oh So Tiny Bunny. Adult readers will easily pick up the message of this picture book and young children will not be far behind. Oh So Tiny Bunny is indeed an oh so tiny bunny during the day. But when he goes to sleep at night, he dreams big, amazing and fantastical dreams. Mostly, he dreams that he is big and tall.

When he is big and tall, he can eat clover as tall as trees and carrots as big as railroad cars.

Vegan Comfort Food

vegancomfortfoodNo, I’m not vegan. But occasionally I cook like one. I don’t mind leaving out milk products every now and again but I do have a thing for cheese. That seems to be the biggest problem between me and veganhood and why it will likely never happen. (That and eggs. I really don’t see a need to ditch eggs.) Still, life in Oregon finds me surrounded by people who do strive to eat local, healthy foods and I have a few vegan friends. Because I like to invite people over and make food that they enjoy eating, I was curious to check out Quick & Easy Vegan Comfort Food.

Positive Life Principles for Women

I wasn’t really sure what to think about Positive Life Principles for Women: 8 Simple Secrets to Turn Your Challenges into Possibilities when it arrived on my doorstep. A new release from Harvest House Publishers, it is written by Karol Ladd who is labeled “The Positive Lady.” I don’t have anything against positive people, but I tend to be more toned down in my approach to life. Perky people look extra perky when standing next to me. I can be perfectly happy, mind you, smiling on the inside and all that, and I still wouldn’t be labeled “positive.” (I’m the sort who thinks I’m smiling but as it turns out, I’m not.
