Here at 5 Minutes for Books, we have a team of reviewers, so we are taking turns posting here for Mailbox Monday. I (Nancy) was a bit worried when my turn came up for this; I received a bunch of books last week, but this week was looking to be empty. Fortunately a couple of books that were delayed finally arrived, and I also downloaded an audio book. And then during a trip to Target my 9 year old asked for a book, and of course I couldn’t say no. We also picked up some library books yesterday though we don’t include those in these posts.
- One of the review books I received from Harper is science fiction, a genre I enjoy but don’t read enough of. I’ve heard amazing things about legendary writer Terry Pratchett, and his new book The Long Earth, a compilation with Stephen Baxter, involves a series of parallel “earths” and a gadget involving some wiring, a three-way switch and a potato.
- The other review book, The Virgin Cure by Ami McKay, while taking place on our planet, is no less mundane. Set in 1871 in Lower Manhattan, it’s the story of a 12 year old girl sold into servitude who ends up ย mixed up in the wild and dangerous world of the Bowery. Late 1800’s NYC is one of my favorite historical fiction time periods.
- Thanks to our partnership with Audio Jukebox, this week I downloaded The Magician’s Apprentice by Kate Banks. I didn’t realize when I requested it that it’s for ages 10+ (not that that would have effected my decision to request it). At a running time of 3.5 hours it will be a quick listen and hopefully one I can pass on to my 9 year old.
- While in Target yesterday, said 9 year old picked up The Secret of the Fortune Wookiee, the newest in Tom Angleberger’s middle grade series about fortune telling origami Star Wars characters. I had tried to convince him to buy it with his birthday money at Toys R Us a few weeks ago but I guess he’d rather spend Mom’s money! Since we already own the first two in the series I couldn’t say no (not that I would have anyway).
How about you? Have you received some ARCs that you can’t wait to read? Or do you have a child who you couldn’t turn down? Link up below, or feel free to share your bounty in the comments if you don’t have a blog.

The Virgin Cure sounds really good. I like reading about that time period, too. Enjoy all your new books!
Nancy says
Check out The Gods of Gotham, I reviewed it earlier this year. It’s the same time period and revolves around New York City’s first police department.

My daughter always wants a new book when we go to Target. It’s hard to say no, so we usually come home with something! She picked out a new Ivy & Bean last time.
You received a nice mix of books this week! Hope you enjoy. ๐
Nancy says
It’s definitely hard to say no! My son walked right up to the display and said we had to get it. Well ok then! ๐

I just got into audio books recently and love visiting Audio Jukebox. Enjoy all your new books!
Nancy says
I’ve been listening to audio books for years, they’re great for a commute, walking/running or even cleaning the house. I love visiting Audio Jukebox as well.
Irene says
Looks like a good stack, happy reading.
Nancy says
I think so, thanks!
Jo says
The Virgin Cure does sounds interesting. Agree, I’ve had a good success rate with books set in late 1800s NYC too.
Nancy says
It’s such a great time period, so much progress being made and colorful people thanks to immigration.
Julie says
These all look wonderful, but especially The Long Earth .. that one needs to go on my to-buy list right away! Enjoy all of the wonderful new reads!
Nancy says
I’m quite intrigued by The Long Earth. Thanks!
Yvonne says
Hi Nancy,
I also quite like the sound of ‘The Virgin Cure’.
Generally, most historical fiction books, written by US authors, which seems to hit the shelves here in the UK, are actually set in period UK, generally London.
I have just started to uncover books from the genre, written and set in the US of the period and I am really enjoying the journey of discovery.
This is definitely for my list and thanks for the recommendation,
Yvonne
Nancy says
There are some wonderful historical fiction books set in the US! I also greatly enjoy early 20th century. Look for Time and Again by Jack Finney, one I greatly enjoyed.
Yvonne says
Hi Nancy,
Thanks for that recommendation, the book sounds intriguing and it has certainly had some outstandingly good reviews.

I’m hosting next month and figure that I’ll get all the books this month and have nothing to post next month so I’ll just have to sit back and be jealous! Sometimes it’s sort of nice to have nothing come in and then get a book last minute. Seems extra special then. ๐
Nancy says
Well I hope you get lots of books next month! I admit I was saving a few from last week just in case but didn’t have to use them. ๐
Judy Blauer says
I sort of envy all of you that receive so many books, but then again, maybe I would never get them read and that would make me sad!
Nancy says
There are unfortunately, some that slip through, but I try to be careful about how many books I accept for review so that doesn’t happen.
Alyce says
My weeks seem to be either feast or famine in the book department. This week was a feast. ๐ I love those weeks of course! The Terry Pratchett book you got looks very interesting.
Nancy says
I definitely feel you on the feast or famine! Figures this week was more of a famine for me. Oh well. ๐
Suko says
Thank you for hosting this, Nancy! I think we share an identical “problem”: too many good books to read!
Nancy says
There are definitely worse problems to have!
Jennifer says
I knew that the 3rd Origami book was coming out, but didn’t realize it WAS out. Just clicked through ๐ Kyle hasn’t read them yet, but I’m definitely going to put them in his hands in the next few months.
Nancy says
Oh he’ll love them. Such great books. I loved them too and may have to “steal” this one from him!
Jennifer says
Oh I loved them as well, and I imagine I’ll read this one before Amanda or Kyle ๐
Elysium says
The Virgin Cure sounds especially good. Enjoy!
Nancy says
It does, doesn’t it? Thanks!
MarthaE says
Guess I need to change the name in my post since you are rotating here. ๐ Nice to have team mates to share. I picked a younger title at Audiobook Jukebox too and really liked it.
Enjoy your reading!
Beth(bookaholicmom) says
I always had a hard time saying no when my kids wanted a book. Then again I have a hard time saying no to books for me too! The Virgin Cure sounds interesting. I’ll have to check it out! Thanks for hosting MM!
BarefootMedStudent says
I’m a little late in adding mine, but here I am! I don’t do weekly book hauls because I didn’t usually get many books (I seem to be on a lucky strike at the moment though). My previous book haul was over six months, this one is over almost two months.
Anna (Diary of an Eccentric) says
I’ve head great things about The Virgin Cure. Thanks for hosting!
